CN BC: Bill C-15 Means Big Hit To BC Budget
The Georgia Straight, 31 Dec 2009 - Liberal senator Larry Campbell claims that Bill C-15 could cost B.C. taxpayers tens of millions in incarceration fees if the Conservative legislation seeking mandatory minimum sentences for drug offences becomes law. "Provincially, I think it could be $30 or $40 million out of the provincial budget for putting people in jail," Campbell told the Straight by phone. "There was a study that suggested it could be up to 1,000 more inmates a year, so figure it out from there." CN BC: Vancouver Police Department on Wrong Side of Drug Policy The Georgia Straight, 22 Dec 2009 - Why Is The Vancouver Police Department Trying To Manipulate The Senate Of Canada? On December 8, one day before a key vote, the department issued a statement opposing minor amendments to Bill C-15. The proposed law would create mandatory minimum sentences for certain drug offences. Numerous policy experts have criticized the bill, stating that it will do nothing to address the crime, addiction, disease, and death generated by the black market for illegal drugs. US MI: Woes Expected in Enforcement of Marijuana Law Livingston County Daily Press & Argus, 20 Dec 2009 - The state's medical marijuana program -- begun in April -- hasn't created headaches for Livingston County's law enforcement, but likely will as the program grows, said county Sheriff Bob Bezotte. The Michigan Medical Marihuana Program allows patients with debilitating illnesses to grow and possess marijuana for medicinal purposes. Those approved receive cards that indicate their participation in the program. US MI: A Southwest Michigan Growth Industry: Medical-Marijuana Economy is Growin Kalamazoo Gazette, 20 Dec 2009 - KALAMAZOO -- A shop specializing in hydroponic-growing equipment opened this month in Three Rivers. In January, classes on soil nutrition and proper lighting will begin in Kalamazoo. By March, a cooperative in Benton Harbor may be doling out ounces of pot to patients.
